Did anyone else catch Marie Vinnels brief cameo appearances on this weeks Time Team from Nether Poppleton? Hope she was paid well for all that trench shovelling! Perhaps Ged could give her a few tips on raising her media profile.

Don't forget that some of us had 'speaking' as well as 'digging' parts when St Leonard's hit the small screen back in June last year..... Pam's tip of the day : Don't wear silly hat when being interviewed for local TV news ........ ;D

My first bit of advice is to get yourself a good agent.I was lucky? enough to be shot at by the British army while filming Bloody Sunday a few years back, rode down Coronation street on a bike (ten takes) and was a camera man on Emmerdale when they had the plane crash.Good pay and great fun, most of the time.See you at the Baftas Maria.Ged

yeah, colin i saw maria on the time team episode from poppleton, i had to rewind the tape about three times to get my brain to register the fact. The episode on sunday night was filmed just down the road from where i live.It was well exciting, unfortunately no visitors including amateur diggers were allowed(boo! hoo!)as the terrain is very treacherous, from where i am typing this i can see the original WW2 hangers where the aircraft were probably housed prior to take off(now a builders workshop)and i am 100mtr parallel to the runway at warton.Usually bloody noisy, colin.

I just happened to look at one of the ads at the top of the page here about celebs guest appearances (at nmp live.co.uk)-Tony Robinson charges from £11k-£15k for his sevices. He is worth every penny of it no doubt, but it seems a bit dear to me (being Northern and tight).Just think of all the beer you could buy for that.I hope Maria got that amount for her appearance.Definitly Ged

My own 30 seconds of media fame came a couple of years ago, asking a question on the history of Killingholme in N. Lincolnshire, on BBC radio 4's Making History (the text is still available on the programs website archive). For those non-listeners, their are quite a few good occassional/regular series on a historical or archaeological nature; Mapping the Town - Julian Richards, Unearthing Mysteries - Aubrey Manning etc, etc. Learn how to set your stereo timer while your out at work!

Pam, wearing a big/floppy hat when on TV - it depends whether you want to be recognised! I avoided being spotted on Time Team Live in York on this basis (well, it was REALLY hot that weekend too).
I'd recommend Aubrey Manning as someone to watch on TV. His landscapes series are excellent. Also watch out for a repeat of Ray Mears' bushcraft series; the first episode, on Mesolithic Britain, was outstanding and compares favourably with many archaeological programmes.

I think Dan Cruickshank's stuff is always very good and there is now a strand on BBC4 called Restoration Nation which covers lots of heritage and preservation issues.I at first thought it was just repeats of the Restoration material but it is new and rather good. I dont know if anyone has seen the "Cathedral" series it manages to mix dramatisations with documentary footage. I am becoming bored with all the docudramas on now-one soon of Einstien,as they seem more about acting and dialogue than reportage and fact. Over on UKTV History there is the excellent Two Men in a Trench while the very irritating Buried treasure and Time Flyers has just finished there.(Sounding like a tv advert) So just two questions to consider over the weekend - Why does Krestinikov off Buried treasure keep saying "brilliant" and why has the chubby one off Time Flyers got such a high voice-I'm sure we have been here before but I still have no idea of the answer. Come on Colin, you must know the answers.

Ah Ged lad. Tis nothing more than pandering to the wider audience. Gone are the days of the cold, objective scientist. What with the likes of Big Brother etc to contend with, what next? "I'm an archaeologist can I dig my way out of here"! I wonder if the discovery of the Saxon wood-lined tombs, elicited a similar response, as that of the scientists at ESA, when the Huygens probe landed on Titan (or the antics of Adam Hart-Davies as he tried to liven procedings on the TV broadcast)?

We had TT on site just the other day (none of the famous ones, just a film crew). Strangely enough it was a good reason for everything to be tidy etc..
I managed to dissapear faster than s**t off a diamond polished titanium shovel as soon as the cameras rolled.
I would love the cameras to be present at some of the more interesting events of an archaeologists year (wink wink to those in the know). What would be even better is to have cameras there when a digging bunch have just been told they are out of a job etc... That is true field archaeology.

Just one question- why does everyone flee when they see the camera? Especially when we all get so irritated when we see robinson or Kristinikoff and think " I could do better than that".Is it something to do with seeing archaeology as a science based discipline sullied and diluted by its unholy alliance with the media or something else? oh yes- and why is the clock on this page always wrong?

Just one question- why does everyone flee when they see the camera? <snip> oh yes- and why is the clock on this page always wrong? Umm, what's with this 'everyone' thing, huh ?? I took time out of my tea-break to be on telly back in June - for a soon-to-be-ex-civil servant that is a pretty remarkable thing as tea-breaks are sacrosanct ! ;D However, I am perhaps more accustomed to the limelight than some, as I have been known to tread the boards occasionally (so far the most lines I have had in a single play was 6 but I did have to say them in an American accent as I was playing a New York cop at the time - complete with nightstick, gun belt, maglite and baseball cap with NYPD on it. I also played a Russian peasant once, but that's another story....) Javier seemed to take to the camera quite well too and sent several reminders to me from his sick-bed to forward on his copy of the DVD ..... I have no idea why the clock is always wrong. Perhaps its a problem with the space-time-continium-thingy. I always feel like I am living in on a different planet anyway, so the time being different as well is just par for the course..... Pam ;D

Hey, with all this media experience, perhaps we should make our own archaeolgy TV series. Or how about a film; St Leonards - the directors cut (or should that be half-cut?). Only joking Kurt!

I run away from the camera because I don't want them to steal my soul with the little box of electrickery!
To be honest, it is more to do with the editing etc.. I know a lot of people who have been made to look foolish due to the 'artistic' editing that has taken place. There are also a lot of diggers who don't want to be used as advertising material for contracting units, usually without being asked. One final (and perhaps most unpleasant) is the way that cameras tend to flock towards the female members of the digging team and try to take shots from 'interesting' angles......... I mean, what's wrong with my butt? (Joke).
But seriously it is very offensive and it is not as if you see such camera angles with blokes, or the cameraman asking permission and calling out instructions to get a better pout etc.
We all know that sex sells, it is just nice to ask the participant first!
