I was hoping to drive down to York from Edinburgh, then use a bike for traveling around. I am staying at the University accommodation. Is there any allocated parking?

As far as I know there is NOT parking available at the accommodation. Individuals might be able to arrange something in advance with the college but it's unlikely. I think there are pay and displey car parks around the campus area, but you don't want to be paying for one of them for a week or two!! If you're coming from Edinburgh you could get the train; GNER have a Guard's Van which you can put your bike in by prior arrangement. www.gner.co.uk/GNER/YourJourney/cycles+on+gner.htm

Hmm, i was planning to get the train but things came up which made having the car important. I'll get in touch with the collage and ask, thanks.

I'll get in touch with the collage and ask. I was planning to drive too, so would be glad to hear of anything you find out. It might be worth several people checking with the uni, as the information given to different enquiries is not always consistent! It will be a pain if there is no longer any reasonably priced parking, as it was an important consideration to me the first time I booked, and I may never have discovered the delights of grovelling in a muddy hole in York, looking for shiny things!

I have spoken to the right people and they have said they will not give out temporary permits but if the organisers get in touch with the conference people or department the are in touch with they may be able to organise something she mentioned "hanger permits". Other than that she suggested P&D. Which i thought was helpful.

The response we had last year was not very good. So this is why we have not included a promise of parking with the accommodation.

Toby - I would be very grateful if you could organise some 'hanging' parking permits for the residences for the few of us that need to drive - I would rather pay £3 a day and be near where I'm staying than £5 a day over at the main campus and have to go there every day to feed the meter. I was talking to Noel and we were both concerned after last year's confusion, and planning to be in touch with the uni but didn't realise that we wouldn't be able to buy a permit for ourselves.

I'm much in the same boat, I'd be very grateful if something could be organised. I'd be happy to pay for the permit, i defiantly agree with Gill about not having to meter feed.

Hi gill could you let me know what is going on with regards parking for the accom this season,i know we were talking about it last weekend, but as yet i have not phoned the uni with regards as to whats going on or if we can park either at a reduced rate or free gratis.I dont relish the thought of main car park parking and then humping gear to the accomodation.I cant understand why other overseas students/holidaymakers can park their vehicles for the summer season without risk of clamping(or hanging permits for that matter)but we have the spectre of the dreaded clampman hanging over us,any suggestions on who i could talk to on behalf of all us poor car users

The response we had last year was not very good. So this is why we have not included a promise of parking with the accommodation. I am being polite about how they were not very good with the parking last year..... After the amount of time that was spent on the phone in 2006, and the lack of any real response that was of use, I have no intention of doing the same thing. So that is why I am not making any promises. For those of you that were not there the policy changed several times, seemingly at random, during the 2006 season. The best results that people had were by asking the people at the university directly (when they were there) If you want to chase it up beforehand please do. We are booked into the Halifax college, 2 adjacent 10 bedded properties (one for 11 week, the other for 9 weeks). The booking should be made out for York Archaeological Trust and it was booked by K Bettsworth.

:)Thanks for that toby, think i will phone the uni direct and see what they can come up with, personally i dont mind paying for parking so long as we can have some reassurance that its ok to do so and there is something we can dangle from a rear view mirror(no smutty replies please)

I phoned them yesterday and they told me they would not give out permits to people. They may tell others something different. The number i used was 0190 443 2222 and got transfered to the right department.
