I was once asked "Why do you have to dig so slow? Can't you just dig it all out with an earth mover and then sift it all and see what you get? You'd get done a lot faster!" I started to respond with something about stratigraphy and such but I saw their eyes start to glaze over, so I changed tactics and said "Because we won't know which stuff we find was buried before the OTHER stuff we find...so we don't know what's older and what's newer." "Ohhh...OK. That's pretty smart!" they replied. I should mention this was a child of about 10-12 asking the question, so I felt that was the best way to explain... Another one I've been asked alot is "What's the coolest thing you ever found??" I usually just smile mysteriously and say, "Do you mean today, or ever in my life?" ;D

I think the best one was from the nutter who walked past st Leonards every morning "When are you going to get a real job"

Oh, and let's not forget the ever-popular, "Did you find any bodies yet?"

My friend did actually find a body this week in one of her trenches and had two scene of crimes officers in there all the rest of the day. They ascertained it was nothing too recent and then asked her to carry on digging.Who was that mad guy who used to come past each morning- was he a thwarted archaeologist, somone from jobcentre plus,or a former trainee from the dig? we may never know.see you all in the summer where I will be passing the site each morning shouting stuff.Ged

Do you ever get asked if you have worked for time team? I have heard quite a few people complain about that one lol.

Ah yes, the "time team question", always a winner ! As well as the standard question, due to me having long blond hair I've also had several people comment, "Oh I thought you were Carenza Lewis for a minute - Do you know her?" But at least now if someone asks if I've worked with the Time Team I can say "Yes, actually, I have" ! ;D

Mel, you just swiped my contribution to the list - we kept getting that one about the mortarium in Trench 5 at St. Leonards 2004. It was lying there for at whole week before I was allowed to dig it up, looking really shiny and new after we washed it, and a lot of the tourists thought we had bought it at the garden centre and put it there just for their benefit...
Sounds like we will still have an audience even if we move to the St. Saviour site - I suppose it fits in neatly with the new DIG attraction? By the way, the site seems brilliant, especially if we can get our hands on some of those burials!

I thought 'So, the Egyptians came to York then?' (looking at the spoil heap) was a good one.

St Leonards 2004, Trench 3:
Is that a Roman duck, mister?
- for those of us who survived the deluge!!

So did the Romans wear red then?
I have traced my family back to 1800 but then there are no records, has somebody hidden them?
Is this worth anything? (open hand with a bit of metal that has been wire brushed to the stage where it is 'shiny' - could have been anything to begin with)
Is that Roman? (answer - yes) Keep digging you might find my mother-in-laws/older partner/etc first birthday card (or similar insult which is usually followed by them getting a whack)
I heard one the other week from a contractor who was doing work on a pavement and overheard two tourists were arguing over if York was a reconstruction... like some sort of big theme park.

More good ones:
- One guy, after being told that we remove the most recent deposits to expose the older ones, asked 'So why do you always dig down, then?'
...we should maybe have buried him with a trowel and a finds tray and told him to pioneer his new technique...
- In the last year of St. Leonard's, a tour guide was heard to say that the York city walls were to built by the Romans to protect against the Vikings. Words fail me.

Words failed Toby (if you can believe that) when in Trench 5 we heard one of the St L's tour guides explaining to visitors something about how it was the Victorians who discovered the air raid shelter....

Some of these deserve framing!
