Last week we received a letter from an external body which suggested it may not be possible to conduct the training excavation in Dean’s Park. Due to staff holidays both inside YAT and externally, combined with the Easter Bank Holidays, we have not been able to get more information about this.
In the meantime we have isolated 4 separate alternative locations (one of which has multiple sites within it) for the excavation. All of them are within the City Walls, all contain deeply stratified archaeology, all offer archaeology which dates back to before the Medieval period. The sites require no further permissions to excavate than the agreement of the Principal Archeologist for York City Council (which is in place for all) and the Landowner (currently in process). If you went on the evening tours last year I probably pointed out a few of them to you on the way round.
We are awaiting a confirmation on one of these alternative sites – The owner has a Project Design and has promised a response by early next week.
So to summarise… we may well not be able to dig at Dean’s Park, but several alternative sites are in place. Nothing whatsoever about the training dig will change except perhaps the location. The courses, the accommodation, dates etc will all be the same.
By the end of next week we should have more information regarding the Dean’s Park site and another option in place and all permissions granted.

I have e-mailed or called everybody who has sent in a booking form (that was here by last Thursday).
I will try to get to everybody else by the end of the day, but will have to go out in a few minutes so it will be later on. (Going to feed lots of chocolate to niece and nephew and then give them back to my sister).

Placement positions may be different if we end up elsewhere.
It depends on the site etc... The site placements will still be there regardless but tour guide placements may not be required.
Again i will be in touch with people.

I can only speak for a few of us - and you drunken, kebab-eating bunch know who you are - but 'a change of venue' really should not make a difference. If dates and accommodation needed to be changed, well, that would be another matter.
As far as I'm concerned, I'd dig up gardens just to be in York! Good archaeology in York gardens!! And no, this is not an offer to anyone with a garden living in York! I have one of my own as of Friday (hehe)!
We are very fortunate to be able to dig such great sites within one of the most beautiful and historic cities in England. The archaeology is superb, the teaching/training is excellent (and second to none) and the friendships made will always bring us back. Sorry, Toby, you are stuck with us!

I know ness it's terrible the personal anguish i have to go throught o force a kebab down!But your right in the respect that i too would dig any garden in york just to be on a dig with the yat.good training/teaching thats second to none meeting up with some very good friends,meeting new faces,plus the chance to get some real hands on experience in archaeology.Am in the garden at the moment over easter and have dug up something resembling an iron age broch!No-one told me it was a rockery!!!

Hi Toby,
I haven't gotten any emails from you; I presume I'll hear something later in the week. As I was going to be guiding for the first three weeks (and this may now not be happening depending on location) will I be able to be an excavation placement for those weeks or have you already got placements sorted for that time?? But I've just thought that all that also depends on whether dates stay the same or change. I'll stop being confused until I hear from you later in the week.

I haven't got any Emails either. Did you get my booking form? Any location in York will be great, with lots of shiney things and stuff to find,and record and draw, and level and then dig up. Great carn't wait. Mel  |

As it said on the placement stuff .... they are not sorted until the end of April - so no worries there then.
If there is a change it is for the location only (as it said in the first message on this thread).
The e-mails all say sent on the e-mail thingy, so I assume there has been a problem with the server in the office - This will have to be looked at on Tuesday. The problem must have started on at some point on the 15th or early 16th as the mail system worked up to then.
I did contact every booking before the posting on here so people knew in advance and did not hav to worry...... Trust e-mail to be funny when you need it.

Yes I got your booking form. I e-mailed you on the 9th March to say so. You responded to it as well.
As I said there has obviously been a problem with the e-mail stuff in the office.

That's fine then. I'm waiting on hearing back from potential employers re working between exams and the training dig. If I might not be able to earn a bit of money in York I may extend my availability to them (if anyone wants me) and not be in York for the first three weeks (definately doing the 9 weeks when accommodation is available). It's all up in the air but as soon as I know anything you'll know.

I got into the office and found the e-mail computer had tripped over itself. I has been 'switched off and then on again' and lots of messages went through it (several of which have definitely got there).

What Phill said goes for me too - but it wouldn't hurt to include nice weather and coastal views in the equation. Maybe somewhere in Greece? That way we can get real kebabs too.
