We had a full house for our spring training session and summer is getting very full already (yorkdig.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=summer2011&action=display&thread=410)
A team working with Ben started recording straight away inside the house he has been working on periodically since last summer. Here they are recording a massive pit cut through the middle of it.
Gary had a team working more towards the middle of the site, on the building with a stone foundation at the front. They were also recording first off.
But soon got on with excavation one of the wall robbing cuts.
At the eastern side of the site Arran had a team working on the building that he and Artemi have been looking at, as well as the other features around it.
You can see how it needed a good bit of work to get it tidy. Pictures taken after the training session can be seen in the April update - yorkdig.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=siteupdates&action=display&thread=422
When you get right into the base of the structure there are some fragile remains of the timber which will have made up the original structure.
Thanks to the team for a great first week of training (I did very little to help as getting a house fit to move into!)
It looks like the team working with Ben had something to hide at the start of week 2?
Just next door to the house the had a pit which was beginning to look very organic indeed. The black plastic bags are covering the timbers that have survived very well.
Within the structure there was more recording of the robbed out walls to be completed.
Across with Gary the team continued emptying out the robbed out wall footings.
Often you do not get much of an idea of the original construction. However this side had a really well preserved slot which could have originally contained a timber for the building.
It was not just work outside, as we had a good number of sessions working inside the main building on the finds that we excavated during the training session.
To the east, with Arran, there was more careful excavation of the fragile building timbers. You can use wooden clay modelling tools for this as they are not as hard as a metal trowel.
Even though we had the odd shower you can see just how dry the site has become in a pretty short period of time.
Once cleaned up there was plenty of recording to get on with.
Thank you again to the team who were part of making week 2 (and the whole spring session) a great success.
Yes the move went well on the following day (thank you to the team who helped with that!)
