The better weather continued into April. To be honest it was actually too dry across most of the site!
Some of the features which were deep still had plenty of moisture at the base. You can see in this pit we have plenty of good organic material surviving towards the base. This is another of our rectangular Viking cess pits, some of you will remember us digging more of them last summer.
In other places we had deeper features, but the fill was not very organic. The preservation of materials should have occurred so we can only assume that they had a less organic backfill? I guess the finds and samples will help us out here.
At the Hungate frontage side of the site we got back on with putting another section through the striped deposits. In this case we are part way through a hearth.
This is a view of the hearth from above. When we are done with this section we will take some column samples to look at and see if we can see seasonal differences etc by looking at the layers microscopically.
WE had a training session on at the start of the month (see - yorkdig.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=423) and the team did a really good job across the. After it finished we did a little more work on the house at the east of the site (Artemi/Arran working area)
You can see from the pictures that it has tidied up really well - ready for some filming that will be taking place....
We also took a little more from the possible entrance which has given a better idea of how it was put together.
Roll on May!
