So the structure in the middle of the site started to get very interesting. It looks similar to a lot of the other Viking buildings we have had, but has some different elements. The most obvious difference is that the entrance does not look like it is stone for holding back soil, more like foundations for a substantial structure..... This should really be a caption competition image.... Though it does give you an insight into just how much in the way of horn core we get from some features. Before we started machine stripping the large terrace deposits in the northern corner of the site we dug a slot through them all. Just by luck this slot went through where there were 2x burials that we did not expect. Date wise we are not sure but one was earing this nice twisted copper alloy bangle. Then it was time to get to work with the big yellow trowel. We machined all the way down to the Roman soil deposits. We had plenty of people watching for features and finds, but these deposits were pretty much clear. I was hoping for at least some decent residual worked flint, but no sign. Below the level we machined to there are plenty of Roman feature though. This machining gave the team plenty of time to catch up with paperwork!
