Another busy month with lots going on. We have had more fun juggling the weather, but the team have done a really good job. We finally got down to sorting out the last burials and features in the southern corner of the trench. It cleaned up very well when it was damp. No pun intended with the 'well'... ...because we actually got remains of a barrel well in the archaeology. This is probably late medieval and the wood seems to be in pretty good condition. Towards the end it was a bit of a juggle for space and access but the team pulled together and did a really good job. One of the graves contained a bead similar to what we saw before (just not 299 of them this time) We have also been looking at finishing off the western corner of the site, and you can see from the picture how good it looked when the team were sorting out the last few bits. Nikki joined us for a couple of weeks training in the middle of the month. She did a really good job learning the skills in what were sometimes pretty cold conditions! Nikki and Artemi got round to excavating a Roman burial that was first seen during evaluations in 2002. The grave contained a pot which had collapsed into the coffin as it rotted away in the past. You can just see the coffin outline (as well as the pot) in this picture. It took a lot of cleaning to get to that stage! Right at the end of the month we have spent a lot of time inside - for obvious reasons!
