We have had a very busy month on and off site. The main aim on site has been to remove all the later features cut into the Viking archaeology. This means that we can get down to a good 'phase' of activity and then dig the sequence in phase as we get earlier and earlier. Some of the modern and post medieval features are really obvious and the original purpose is even more obvious! We have had a nice sequence with a drain, a well and then a toilet pit The recording proved to be fun There have been similar cess pits and wells elsewhere across where we are working What has turned out to be really interesting is the striped deposits that they have been cut into This spreads across the whole area towards the current street frontage for Hungate As you get further away from Hungate the definition is a bit more subtle, but you can still make out pits. In this case we are getting close to the whole series of medieval pits similar to what was excavated in H1 The team have done really well, and worked in conjunction with the trainees better than we could have imagined yorkdig.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=photos&thread=331We have even had time to take 'Arty' shots when digging!
