Well it is just around the corner.... so I will start putting some updates up on a 'sticky' so people will know what is going on. We will also try to update the web pages at least weekly (placements diary?) when we get underway.

We are nearly into June, just three weeks before we start. Hopefully the sunshine will come out for the summer pretty soon.
In the next week or so I will need to - Sort out contracts for the staff on the site (Elena and Ian) Get the cabin people to have a look at the access and see what office/store we can use on site Book a machine to clear away the stuff at the top of the trenches Start buying new covers for the trenches Put together a shopping list of all the other bits we will need Sort out some of the paperwork for the site Put some new recording manuals together Design a new t-shirt! (any suggestions - clean suggestions!) Put together a new checklist for training tasks Create some laminated prompt cards for drawing etc
Regarding the t-shirt - I will sort a design and pass it on to the same people as last year so that if you want you can order (and even get one posted) before you arrive at the dig. When this is sorted i will put up a new thread about it.

Well...
All the fencing is sorted for next week - big mesh panels for the entrance and the trenches. A cabin will arrive the same day. It is only small but is secure and will hold all the tools and stuff we need for site. A machine is booked for the following day. it will open up the trenches and remove the really modern material.
Elena and Ian are sorted for start dates.
The recording and reference paperwork is pretty much in place. I will shop for new stuff when setting up next week.
So all coming together pretty well.

We have now got all the fencing and cabins sorted out.
The cabin is going to be called 'Toby's Toolbox' or 'Toby's Grotto' as Elena cannot reach up to unlock the door. The steps into it have to be locked inside on a night.
After a bit of juggling we managed to get the trenches opened up today. Henry the machine driver was very patient as we were sorting stuff out.
We found (well I found! (come on Elena I dare you to make a post)) a wall a floor medieval pot and tile and egg cup and a new purse for Elena
The hardcore surface that has been laid will make it difficult to keep the trenches clean, but it is all good practice.

So the purse was pink then?

It might have been pink... in the past.
The wall is turning out to be interesting.... more medieval pot turning up too.
Now we are cleaned up round the trenches it is looking more like an archaeological site than a bomb site (thankyou to those who have helped).
I have spent a lot of the day spraying weedkiller etc round the site to make sure it does not turn into a jungle whilst we are digging. We could always try and have a sunflower contest over the 12 weeks we are there?

It looks like we have at least a couple of walls now. They look suspiciously medieval... but we will find out when we get to them properly.
There has been still more in the way of finds - medieval pot/tile etc and some oyster shell which could be any date.
The post-medieval archaeology looks interesting and should be a good challenge to take to bits.
Pam was in on Friday to sort the stuff for the DIG live activities that will run alongside the excavation. It looks like they will be having a lot of fun doing that.
