If anybody is doing a project involving surveying check out the free program Sketchup sketchup.google.com/, a free download that integrates with Google Earth; it is a reasonably sophisticated CAD/3D program that allows you to draw plans and extend them into 3D structures. It was recommended by a chap giving a talk to the YAT community archaeology program on building surveying (he was talking about the pro version at about £250, but the free version has most of the features of the full program). Compared to something like AutoCAD at £2000+ (the Lite version is £700!) it is pretty good to get something like that for free. I am thinking of using it for an earthwork survey that I need to complete as part of an A-level project.
