I don't know if any one saw it but More4 had a Time Team Special (probably a repeat) about a major urban excavation in Canterbury in 2000-2001. It was not a Time Team dig itself, so it was quite interesting seeing a large scale excavation in progress, and the problems they encountered. I particularly liked the bit when in December 2000 the weather conditions were pretty bad, heavy rain turning to snow, and Tony Robinson asked the site co-director if she was going to give the diggers a half day off as things were so bad, and she nearly fell over laughing.

I remember seeing this the first time around, but caught just the last half hour yesterday as I was channel hopping. It was particularly interesting to see again the pitfalls and problems encountered in Canterbury with the public side. Maybe some tips on do's and don'ts for whoever gets the job of overseeing the 'big dig' at York's Hungate redevelopment, where 'public archaeology' is set to be included as part and parcel of the project......

The public side of things was very interesting. Public access becoming a part of many specifications and hopefully we can all learn from stuff in the (not so distant) past.
To me the best part of the show was when Tony was showing the terrible living conditions in the accommodation.

I decided a while ago that 'circuit digging' wasn't for me for that very reason. I think if it were me I would have rather joined the sensible chap and set up camp somewhere (mind you, I do have a modern caravan with cooker, hot water, shower, central heating and air con etc....).
