Not that I'm gloating or anything- but I'm going to Pompeii!!! ;D Over Easter for 3 weeks to dig at the Temple of Venus. I am very very excited (yes, there has been jumping up and down). On the downside- considering the way my bank account will stand after I visit it today for flights etc it's looking like I might not make it back up to York this year But- I'm going to Pompeii

Hey Caroline,
I hope you make it up to York for a bit...a weekend visit perhaps to show me your Pompeii photos?? I'll be there all summer (as far as I know) and it would be fab to see you. I can say with total honesty that I'm not at all jealous of you going to Pompeii. I'm excited for you but have no desire to dig outside the UK ever again (three weeks of hell in France was enough). I hope you have a fantastic time there and I look forward to hearing all about it.

I might not be snowing in Pompeii!
I hope you have a great time over there. Make sure you have a good look round the ruins.
Take care in Naples and the other suburbs as it can often be a nasty hole of a place. Make sure you go to Ercolano, the ruins are better and the view from the top should be good at that time of year (less smog).
If you get earthquakes etc do not worry too much, they happen all the time not just when it wants to erupt.
The BA flight into Naples is a bit more expensive but worth it.
The transexual prostitutes hang round the circumvesuviana station at night (why did I remember that?)
Most of all enjoy the food, beer, football and the archaeology.

Just thought i'd drop a note from Pompeii. Just finished our 2nd week- 1 more to go. The weather is absolutely glorious, but the men are incredibly sleazy (and as we are an all female team we get a fair amount of attention!). The dig's going pretty well (as far as I can telòl) but we have a heck of a lot to do next week. We have evidence for the gardens in the form of planting pots- one very complete (guess who found that one!). We also saw Boris Johnson on his family holiday, and got filmed for 'Pompeii Live'- a channel 5 production (so goodness knows what it'll be like) to be aired in June. There you go. Heculaneum, Oplontis and Naples are also great, but I absolutely love Pompeii.

It sounds like it has not changed a bit in the last 6 years!
I hope the last week goes as well as the first couple.
(Make sure you wash dig clothes separate to normal stuff when you get back - the soil there is great for staining stuff)
