Hi! There are a number of opportunities for volunteers to get involved with the archaeological project that we are doing as part of the Hungate (York) Regeneration scheme. This is not linked with the Archaeology Live! training excavations that we will be holding during the summer months. Nor is it directly linked with the access that will occur linked with the Community Archaeologist (John Kenny). We will also be offering training outside of the normal Archaeology Live! season. So if you would like to get involved and get some intensive one on one training from part of the team, or maybe come on site for the occasional day, this can be catered for (see yorkdig.proboards21.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1172755592) If you would like to do some voluntary work linked with the Hungate project, have been a trainee/placement on a previous Archaeology Live! project and can offer your services on a regular basis, please get in touch with me. tkendall@yorkarchaeology.co.uk

How long will this be running for? I'm quite interested in this but haven't the time to do anything other than a-level work at the moment. When I'm at uni, (hopefully Sheffield) York will only be a short journey so it would be convenient to pop there for a day or two and get some extra experience. What sort of charges should I expect to pay?

The volunteer access to the site will be going on for as long as the excavations are (5 years). The type of work undertaken will be limited in what will be done on site as we cannot afford to lose a staff member that would be required to supervise. It also depends on what skills the volunteer already has, what they have already done with Archaeology Live!. The voluntary work is voluntary - so volunteers do not pay. If people are looking to get digging experience they want to enquire about the training we are offering outside the normal Archaeology Live! season. See the link above and... www.jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/hungate/training/mentoring.htm
