We frequently get a misunderstanding about terminology for the people on site so i thought it would be worthwhile putting in a few descriptions just so people know.
Trainee - a person who comes on the site and pays to be trained. They may have a lot of experience or no experience whatsoever, they are there to get training and dig and find things on the site. Some universities call their undergraduates on training digs 'placements' when in fact they are trainees. Anybody can be a trainee.
Placement - a person who already has had training and been a trainee on an Archaeology Live! dig or somewhere else. They are there to help run the site, doing the less interesting parts of the archaeological process, and spend very little time digging. They do not get any direct training and accordingly do not pay. There are only a few placement positions per year.
Volunteer - a person who works on the site voluntarily and does not pay to be trained. There is often confusion when people say they want to volunteer when in fact they want to be a 'trainee'. With Archaeology Live! we do not have any volunteers on the site during the training dig.
If you have any other queries just give me a shout.
