Well it all started of a little cold and damp at the start of 2011!
Thankfully the snow had gone, but we still had problems with ice and water. In the end it was a lot of pumping and making the place a little more tidy at first.
We then went about removing a very thick layer of frost damage across the site. It was still very wet, even in the 'dry' areas of the site.
Down in the bottom corner we had another really good clean up of the stripes. It is a little further back now so you can see more detail closer to the hearths.
This is so that they could build a frame to 'lift' a thin section by sticking it on to some plaster that the frame supported.
This is being transferred to Jorvik as part of the latest refurbishment (bottom of the news page on the link)

The archaeology we have looked at has been very interesting. Up on the top, on the edge of the community area, we have found feint traces of a building which may be from the 11th or 12th century. You can seethe beam slots on the picture.
The possible Roman mausoleum that Ben and his team were working on in the summer is determined to turn into another Viking building. There is still a lot to look at in the base of the building, but it may even be re-use of a Roman structure?
It is even more unusual where Artemi was working as we seem to
have both Roman and Viking? I guess we just need to get the features dug and see what finds we get to date them.
A big thank you to the team for all the hard work during what has been pretty unpleasant weather.
