June has been another great month, with lots going on across the whole site, not just Block H.
We welcomed a large group of Bradford undergraduates on site at the start of the month.
They came along for 3 weeks as part of the 1st year course.
The first thing we did was a massive clean up across the site. As you can see from the pictures they did a great job!
Thank fully we got most of the big clean completed before it got too hot and sunny. Once the sun had been out for a while the ground became very hard and difficult to clean.
Each group led by Elena, Ben and Artemi were working on a range of features in specific areas. These areas are the same ones that we will use during the summer training, so lots to look forward to. Lots of nice finds were revealed, including this Roman pot which may fit together once it has been cleaned up.
The commercial team continued with areas towards the Hungate street front. A huge volume of soil was shifted in a relatively short period of time.
This revealed more pits! (yes cess pits found by Arran!)
One of the pit contained the near complete skeleton of a juvenile pig.
Once that archaeology was cleared we saw the traces of what could be structures, structures within the stripes. This may finally give more clues as to what they were built up of.
These structures may just be partitions within the viking plots, but whatever they are we want a closer look.
We then cleared an area closer to the Hungate street front. This will hopefully allow us a better chance to see any further structures and also answer questions about the stripes.
I will be able to give you an update of what we have been doing elsewhere on Hungate during the summer months. Make sure you follow the Archaeology Live! site diaries.
