The variable weather has had an influence on the work we have been doing. The amount of cleaning up it takes can be a bit disheartening - but... When you find something really interesting like a dog skeleton it makes up for it! The early cess pits that we have found have been full of juicy environmental information. This one was earlier than the stripes (possibly c.900AD) and you can see where they have dropped into the backfill as it sunk when the organic material rotted. We can now explain the source of some of the striped material as we have burnt areas and in this case a hearth. This is where a thick layer of burnt material spread out from, though it was not inside a building. It could be that we have a process running in cycles or seasonal episodes that has been used to construct the striped deposits.
