I am currently an Archaeology student at Bournemouth Uni and I'm looking for my summer placement. I want something near to home and was just wondering if this dig takes on students for summer placements and if you do what do I need to do? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I thought you just posted questions on here. I don't want to be a supervisor, I just want to dig for four weeks. But thanks anyway.

Kath, Thanks for passing on the information. Amy, The only supervisors on the site are the paid staff (trainers). We use the term placement in a slighty different way to what many universities do. Have a look at the thread - yorkdig.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=archlive2009&action=display&thread=295Is this for your end of 1st year experience, or are you looking to expand on that? We can do training for periods of four weeks. Cheers, Toby

I wasn't looking for training. I will have had 4 weeks site experience by that point anyway. I was looking more towards the volunteer section but evidently you don't take volunteers on. It is for part of my university work, I would need assessment on it. Do you have any ideas of any archaeogical places that take people on for uni placements?

Amy,
With Archaeology Live! we don't have volunteers, as you have seen, just trainees and placements. Obviously the placements have an application procedure as we do not want unsuitable people, people trying to get free training, too many new people on site etc..
If it is an assessed part of your uni work (Year 2 - Level I) they should provide a list of suitable placement organisations. We do have a separate vocational system in place that is linked with the University of Bradford and there is a lot of paperwork etc in the background for that (email trainingdig@yorkat.co.uk with more info and a contact within the dept)
For other options and organisations just do a Google and also chase BRITARCH/AIA AFOB/I LOVE THE PAST/BAJR/PAST HORIZONS/EH etc... From what I have heard the economic climate means that a lot of places are more reluctant to offer vocational placements as they cannot be sure of projects of supervision.
Good luck hunting.
Cheers,
Toby

Thank you for that. They haven't provided us with a list, have told us we need to find out for ourselves. I have already emailed Bradford and York Uni so I guess I'll just have to play the waiting game. Thanks!

sounds like my uni - they say that field work is compulsory - but they do nowt to help u out. well, apart from offering a fortnight at either ormskirk or the isle of man, neither of which are half as exciting as york!
good luck hunting. i know a woman who's got herself a few weeks in iceland this summer, so i know u can find a placement if u look hard enough / shake your fist at the right people!

Peta!! Are u implying i threatened them?? Amy, try Grampus heritage. They have 6 or 8 week placements depending on how far u are through uni, there are still some places available. www.grampusheritage.co.uk

Ive only just read this (evidently lol) and i cant believe universities will not provide placements. I thought my university was bad enough for providing rubbish placements but at least we have it all organised and have a choice as to where we go.
Cardiff Uni are reluctant for you to find your own digs as the marking and criteria of your site supervisor may not be the same as the universities marking criteria.
That said, another mature student on my degree managed to get on digs with Mike Parker Pearson this summer for 3 weeks *shakes fist, jealous face!!*
Anyway i hope you found somewhere to dig, still cant believe your uni didnt organise anything thats a farce

most universities train u to write essays about archaeology, not to actually do the job. it's a shame they're not vocational courses, cos they get u all giddy about archaeology, and then u turn up on site, and don't know which end of the wheel barrow you're supposed to push...
the good thing about the york dig is that they don't care about your qualifications, your age, your physical ability, or your gender. it's a great experience, and an excellent complement to any courses u do.
i'm coming back for my fifth time this year!
