Why did no one tell me it involved proper work?I never realised just how little I knew before, and the essays are HARD!! Why are all theories about cave art proposed by strange little french men without freinds (and who clearly aren't getting any)? I can't think of any other reason for inflicting drawings of drawings with three-pronged thingyes and ideas of the cave as womb and horses as men/bison as women at me. Agggh.Back to work.My director of studies/supervisor has an extremely attractive pair of pink cords though.usually with cigar ash all down them- the dressing in cambridge is fantastic-it's like once you pass a certain level of genius you no longer have to dress like a normal person...

Oh I found that out during the AS course! However, I do know a rock art expert who isn't little, strange or French, though he does work over there from time to time. I can (Toby permitting) post a link to his website, if that would help at all Cheers Mark

Don't despair Luiseach I'm sure it will become better eventually, I've heard archaeology at Cambridge tends towards the theory side. I've just spent my first day as a student (or at least my first for thirty years), and not a sniff of archaeology yet the depatmental introduction isn't until Wednesday. I have however been issued with my complimentary condom courtesy of the student union (Ah!! student life).

Thank you, I feel better now (Did you get a fascinating talk about how to apply a condom to a cucumber/fruitveg of your choice too, keith?) and yes please if you can give me that website...the shamans on drugs theory of parietal art isn't really working for me either...

Sadly not, but I strongly suspect that a significant number will find uses for which they were not originally intended during the course of freshers week.

That's going to be a fun story for class on Thursday night Your wish, and all that... www-users.york.ac.uk/~ndpte500/alpsarchaeology.blogspot.com/The top one is his own site, the bottom is a blog of a summer excavation he went on in the Alps this year with contributions from two other archaeologists. Hope you find them useful Cheers Mark

Ah Keith, it's it great being a full time student?? Not so sure about the condom bit, but hey, each to their own.. I hope you are out there, raving it up with the best of them? Have a wonderful time, matey! Back to the 'hard sums', as Luiseach calls them. PS. Yes, madam, it's hard! You go to CAMBRIDGE! I have NO sympathy for you, Smarty-Pants. NONE! ;D

Second year wasn't that fun either... At least in third year you've hopefully gotten all the theory lectures out of the way... though at Cambridge i'm doubting it.

Some of us took the long route and studied part-time - imagine 6 years of having to think about essays, reading, seminars, exams, etc ! I worked 4 days at week at the same time, so had to cut back on social life quite a bit. Suppose I ought to say here that it is worth it in the end (cos it is) but really the hard work starts after Uni when you have to get a job !! Pam (currently 'resting')

One positive I thought of... when you hit third year you do get to choose something you WANT to write about. It makes it exciting for the first few weeks at least!

Oh Luiseach, I feel your pain, although magnified many many times, as I have foolishly chosen to do cave art for my dissertation. And I agree with the strange little French men thing, Leroi - Gourhan had far too much time on his hands. Anyway, if you need any help with the cave art stuff, give us an email...

Ali you're a lightsaber.I mean, lifesaver. The Yoda dog thing was confusing me... Thankfully have cobbled something together, now attempting to write something for social anthropology. any tips always welcome though! Things is looking up however, there's a whispered rumour that there may be digging soon, hahah! The only problem is that it's Carenza Lewis who is organising it, and unfortunately she scares the living daylights out of me...

now attempting to write something for social anthropology. any tips always welcome though! From experience, the more banal and/or nonsensical, the better. Me and soc. anth. didn't really see eye to eye... I can forwrad you my first year essay on reindeer herding though (I'm not joking)!! Don't forget that the gap between the rocks was filled by a limestone and rubble core...
