Archaeology Live 2006 York Minster Deans Park

So this summer should be very interesting.

Down to the hard work of Richard Hall and the helpful cooperation of the Dean and Chapter at York Minster we will be able to dig within the Deans Park.

The area we will look at is just to the north of the nave and should contain an incredible amount of archaeology. There is the possibility of the 12th century Chapel of St Sepulchre... the west range of the archbishops' palace... Ingrams Mansion... as well as the (now familiar to many of you) disturbed remains from the Roman period onwards.

Dates will be the same as last year.

Accommodation is not available for the first 3 weeks, the university does not have the same places available as last year.

The working week will be Tuesday-Saturday.

Tasters/trainees/placements as before, with the addition of paid guide placements.

Yes there will be public viewing areas.

Cost are similar to what it was for St Leonard's in 2004.

Bookings can be made now, the website will hopefully go live in the next few days.

Placements are open to everybody.

But, they are limited numbers, you have to apply as in the details, there is always lots of interest and the final decision is made on what is best for the project.

Hi everyone -

I'm new to the board, and was hoping to ask you all a couple of questions. I'm going to sign-up for the dig for a few weeks and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice (things I should bring, things I should prepare myself for). This is going to be my first dig - I'm really excited. It seems that many of you already know eachother, which is really cool. Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, if you've followed the discussions in this forum you should be well prepared for the type of archaeologists' humour that you will encounter - so consider yourself warned ;-) The information package that you will receive once you've booked and paid takes care of all the practical stuff about what to bring etc. (I think the same information is on the YAT website).

Apart from that: be prepared for black and broken fingernails, lots of beer, and a really good time. You are putting yourself in serious danger of catching the bug like the rest of us...
