I was considering doing an on-line AS course run by college-on-the-net.co.uk. I've no idea how good it is, and would be interested to hear from anyone who knows about it. Not very useful for you folk out there in the far-flung corners of the empire (sorry, ex-empire) as there are still written exams to do 'locally'. I'm not sure I have the staying-power to succeed in distance learning, so will probably just look at a few books (as long as there are plenty of pictures) and enjoy coming to York for summer fun. See some of you quite soon

That is the course I had my eye on actually. I can't find any other courses so I think I am starting it after my exams have finished in a couple of weeks. Looks like I am going to have to start saving my EMA though. It's quite expensive, well for me anyway lol.

I teach the AS Archaeology - there is only one course, since AQA is the only board that runs it now.
One of my students was doing the dstance learning course, but joined my class half way through the year, because he found it suited him better.
If you have the sticking power to do the course by distance learning - fantastic! However, the course is a lot of work, especially module 2, which gets a bit technical.
This is not to put you off, but you might as well know what you are letting yourself in for!
If you're not bothered about getting a qualification, you might be better off just getting the archaeology coursebook (Gorin, Grant and Fleming) and reading that - it's a good general introduction and is used at university level in the first year.
Incidentally, if you do decide that you want to go for the distance learning option, you need to check that there is a centre locally that will allow you to do the exams - my college has stopped allowing external candidates to sit exams at the centre.

Thank you for the information Charlie. I saw it actually when I was getting past biology papers off the AQA website and I have had a look at the information on it. Here is the link for it if anyone is interested. www.aqa.org.uk/qual/gceasa/arc_assess.htmlDo you think my school would let me just take the exam there?

Hi Laura.
You'd really have to ask your school about that; presumably some of the exams that happen at your school are done through AQA, so that in itself shouldn't be a problem, its just a mtter of finding out what their policy is!
Unfortunately, none of the pictures from the source papers are online, which is a bit of a nuisance, but at least you can see the kind of wuestions they ask and the answers they want!
