I should start to wear steel toe caps round the house... managed to bust a toe on a chair the other day.
The most embarrassing thing is that I screamed and carried on like it was the end of humanity and the chair didn’t even flinch!

You have my sympathy in my younger days I managed to break and dislocate my middle toe on a radiator pipe (don't ask!). After the initial panic when I saw the shape of my toe and pushed it back into place, it was agony! I couldn't walk without a stick for about a fortnight. Hope you are getting around a bit better than I managed.

I've been unfortunate enough to see the poorly toe - all swollen and purple it is - not a pretty sight - but Toby has been on site and digging most days since the little mishap ! We hear a little whimper now and again but really he is being oh so brave

Life is so hard... if only I had a fiddle to play whilst I suffered.

Toby, looking at the photos you posted, I notice that all are wearing hard hats and fluoro vests. Will this be a requirement for trainees / placements?
p.s. Hows the toe?

Hats/vests/gloves will all be sorted out at our end so no need for people to bring their own. It is standard PPE for most sites linked with construction, just that with where we are working it is 5 years down the line before any construction goes on there. It will also be a good way of telling who should be on the site and who is a visitor.
Toe still a pain... but I am struggling on... lif is soooo hard!

Toby, does that mean we will have to wear sweaty, plastic hats at all times on site?
As a baldy (of many years standing ) I try to avoid hats, especially in warm weather. I know how uncomfortable, sweat inducing, dehydrating, and annoying they can be. Other than that I really like them.

Not sweaty plastic hats - just hard hats. We will have covers for wear we are working if the sun is really hot anyway. The ones we had last year did really well and reduced the amount of sunburn that people have suffered in the past.
We will just have to make sure that we rehydrate properly after work.
The depth of some of the features that we will be digging would mean we would have to wear hard hats anyway. In fact it would not suprise me if they introduce hats as general PPE soon anyway as they stop sunstroke / sunburn etc.

Hi Toby
Noel and Ged have some concerns about the steel toe cap issue and have asked me to en quire on there behalf Anomalously of course!
Is there a wider range of steel toe caps available ?
a stiletto heel version is more favorable with the guys and are they available in a series of different shades ?
size 9 is preferred but 10 would be better if its warm, as this would suite Noel's water attention giving the time of year ?
Thanks again for being understanding with there personal needs !
Regards Neal

Now then-Ged here.I wonder if there is a trainee out there who is finding the financial aspects of coming to the dig rather difficult(thats everyone probably).I know when I was a student money was too tight to mention.Well-if the cost of a pair of boots is maybe preventing you coming to York -there is hope. A single brand new pair of boots is available to the trainee who Toby sees as the most deserving(or undeserving).Although somewhat flippant in tone this is a genuine offer -my way of putting something back into the training dig which gave me a chance.Ged

Ged,
You are an absolute star.
If anybody has a problem with affording boots (£20-£25) to come on the dig please let me know and I will sort it out for one lucky person.
If you use the PM system or e-mail the standard 'trainingdig' address saying why you deserve the boots I will collate the responses and make a decision with Ged as the main input.
Cheers,
Toby

You are a bloke, anything is the end of humanity for your kind.
Stubbed toe, cold/flu, it's all the same.
I read in the paper the other day that they are testing making sperm out of a cell that women have so you know, it's only a matter of time before you men become obsolete anyway!

Mandy-I take it you were in SNAKE BITE mode when you wrote the nice message about us chaps-what would women do without men,who would tell them what to do?Joking of course. The first line of THE message sounds like it was uttered by Daleks "anything is the end of humanity for your kind" Love Ged-NOW BACK TO BOOTS,please

This is going to be an incredibly stupid question but I wanted to check anyway... If a pair of boots in France has the EN345 thingy is that the same as ones in Britain with EN345???
